Healthy grocery shopping tips//my must haves

I have such a love/hate relationship with grocery shopping, I love it because I can see all my options and it opens my mind for new recipes but on the flip side if you don’t have a clear path it can be quite intimidating. So here I am to telly ou guys my must haves and how to grocery shop the healthy way.

My must haves:

  • beans (lentils, black beans, chickpeas)

  • rice (sprouted rice, basmati, white rice, brown rice)

  • vegetables (spinach, kale, bell pepper, onion, cabbage, zucchini, potatoes)

  • fruits (apples, bananas, berries, citrus)

  • limes/lemons for salads

  • nut milk

  • rolled oats

  • various spices

  • organic meats

  • sprouted bread (sprouted sourdough, flax bread, minimal ingredients)

  • nut butters (no added sugars if possible)

  • fresh herbs (cilantro, basil)

Shopping tips:

-Always keep your grocery list healthy and clean, I like to make sure I can read all the ingredients on my food clearly and not have a long list of 50+ ingredients. Stay away from refined foods, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils and artificial colors. (All in moderation)

-stop getting sucked into labels. ‘Organic’ doesn’t always mean healthy. ‘Fat free’ sometimes means they sneak other hidden fillers and ingredients in. Some times they even add sugar to replace the fat missing. WHY. ‘Healthy’ is usually a marketing term companies use, until you actually look at the ingredient list.

-save money by avoiding pre-cut foods and buy whole foods it’s a lot cheaper that way!

-shop for all your health staples first, fruits/veggies/meats/beans etc... then buy your treat items. It helps when you see all the healthy options FIRST.

-don’t go in hungry! I make this mistake 90% of the time and end up wanting EVERYTHING. Going in with a full stomach keeps me focused on my goal: health foods.

-make a list by separating your proteins (meats, beans, fish, etc) carbs (oats, rice, potatoes, quinoa, etc) fats (nuts, seeds, pb, avocado, etc) vegetables and fruits. Make it clear you’re getting a healthy balance of every food group.

Lastly, I want to note... eat heathy and clean but always remember ITS OKAY to treat yourself. Have that ice cream girl you deserve it! At the end of the day just get back on track. I like to live by the 80/20 rule. I eat good foods 80% of the time and the other 20% I’ll eat whatever I want. (Although I do try to eat healthy snacks and sweets: see my favorite snack blog!) ditch food guilt, just eat real foods!

A post is coming soon about becoming more GREEN and lessening your waste and plastic usage! Remember to always bring your reusable bags!
