How to store produce plastic free
Welcome back friends!
Today I wanted to share with you guys how to store produce without using any plastic. In our home we always are very stocked on fresh fruits and vegetables (if you guys couldn’t tell) and we are very blessed to have access to fresh food from the farmers market! Since I quit using plastic bags and containers for all of my produce I had to find out ways to store everything without it going bad so fast. So I like to experiment and find the best way to store all of my produce.
After much trial and error these are the ways I have ben able to keep my produce fresh during the week:
(first is visuals and keep scrolling for list of fruits/veggie storage)
Leafy Greens:
-spinach, lettuce, cabbage, arugula, water cress
Remove bands, store in linen (shown above), towel dry then wrap.
-Kale
Remove bands, store in jar of water in fridge (like flowers) or wrapped in linen towel
Potatoes:
-Yams, sweet potato, white potato, etc…
Store these in a cool, dark, dry place. (shown above, in a basket in my pantry)
Apples:
Loose in crisper drawer or on counter in a fruit basket
Asparagus:
Store in a jar of water on counter or in the fridge
Avocado:
on counter, once cut then wrap in bees wrap and store in fridge
Banana:
Store on the counter or fruit bowl away from ethylene sensitive produce (bananas will ripen other fruits and vegetables fast, so keep away from sensitive produce to secure shelf life)
Herbs:
-basil, cilantro, parsley, etc…
Store in a jar of water in fridge.
Berries:
-Strawberry, blueberry, raspberries, etc…
Store these in a dry, air tight jar or container. (Only rinse before use, these will get moldy fast)
Citrus:
-Oranges, lemon, lime
Store loose in crisper drawer.
Mushrooms:
Store in a sealed container, or in a bowl covered with bees wrap
Broccoli:
Store in a jar of water or chopped and in a sealed jar or produce bag
Tomatoes:
Store at room temperature on counter, once cut it can be wrapped in bees wrap in fridge
Bell Pepper:
Store loose in crisper drawer
Onion:
Kept on counter until ready to use, once cut store in crisper drawer
From my experience these are the best ways to keep my produce fresh. (even though we go through the produce super fast!) If you guys have anymore produce you’re curious about storing just send me a message and I would be happy to help!
